FAQs on PAN Card – Part 2 Documents Required to Apply for PAN Card

What are the documents required to apply for PAN Card?

There are few basic documents like: passport size photograph, Proof of Identity, address proof, proof for your Date of Birth. Few documents vary according to the type of PAN Card holder. Here we will give the list of options for each type of document you can choose one of them.

Documents required for PAN Card if you are an Indian Citizen or a commercial entity incorporated in India:

  • In case of Individual:

  1. Two passport size photographs, photographs should be recent and size (3.5 * 2.5 cm).
  2. A photocopy of your identity proof. You can use anyone of the following documents as a ID proof:
  • Passport
  • Voter ID Card
  • Aadhaar Card
  • Driving License
  • Ration Card
  • Central Government Health Scheme Card
  • Photo ID card issued by the Central Government, State Government or any Public Sector Undertaking (PSU).
  • Pensioner Card
  • Identity Certificate duly signed by either Member of Parliament or Member of Legislative Assembly or Municipal Councilor or a Gazetted Officer.
  • Identity Certificate provided by Bank having attested photograph along with Bank account number.
  1. A photocopy of your Address Proof – you can use any of the following document as a address proof:

  • Passport (your spouse passport will also do)
  • Voter ID Card
  • Driving License
  • Aadhaar Card
  • Utility Bills; anyone of: Electricity Bill, Telephone Bill, Broadband connection Bill, residential water bill (bill should be of last three months, not more than that).
  • LPG Gas connection card
  • Bank Account statement
  • Depository Account Statement
  • Domicile certificate
  • Post office Passbook
  • Property Tax assessment order (latest)
  • Allotment letter of accommodation issued by Central Government or statement Government (it should not be more than three years old).
  • Property Registration Document
  • Certificate of address proof issued by a Member of Parliament or member of legislative assembly or Municipal Councilor or a Gazetted Officer.
  • Certificate of address proof issued by your employer.
  1. A photocopy of your date of birth proof:

  • Passport
  • Voter ID Card
  • Aadhaar Card
  • Driving License
  • Health Card issued by central Government
  • Marriage Certificate
  • Birth Certificate
  • Pension Payment order
  • Matriculation Certificate (Mark sheet of 10th Class)
  • Domicile Certificate

Important Note: if you are applying for PAN card for minor individual only date of birth proof is required, no need of ID proof and address proof.

  • In case of HUF (Hindu Undivided family):

If HUF is applying for PAN card, above mentioned documents should be submitted with reference to the ‘Karta’. Or an affidavit by the Karta stating Karta Name, Father’s Name and address of all Coparceners on the date of application.

  • In case of a Company:

If you are applying for PAN card in the name of Company you are required to submit a copy of ‘Certificate of Incorporation (COI).

  • In case of Partnership Firm:

If the type of card holder is Partnership Firm, you are required to submit a copy of Certificate of Registration issued by Registrar of Firms.

  • In case of Limited Liability Partnership:

Copy of Certificate of Incorporation is required.

  • In case of Association of Person:

If type of card holder is an Association of Person (AOP) or Trust, a copy of Trust Deed or a copy of Registration Certificate issued by the Charity Commissioner.

What are the documents one should provide in case you are a Foreign Citizen or a Business entity incorporated outside India?

  • If Card holder type is HUF and Individual:
  1. Two passport size photographs, photographs should be recent and size (3.5 * 2.5 cm).
  2. A photocopy of your identity proof. You can use anyone of the following documents as a ID proof:

 Passport

  • Person of Indian origin card (POI Card)
  • Overseas Citizen of India Card (OCI Card)
  • Citizenship Identification Number
  • Tax Identification Number

Citizenship Identification Number or Tax Identification Number should be attested by anyone of the following:

  1. Apostille
  2. Indian Embassy
  3. High commission
  4. Authorized officials of overseas branched of Scheduled Indian Banks
  1. A photocopy of your Address Proof – you can use any of the following document as a address proof:
  • Passport / Passport of the Spouse
  • Voter ID Card
  • Aadhaar Card
  • Driving License
  • Utility Bills: Electricity Bill, Telephone Bill, Broadband Connection Bill, Residential Water Bill (Anyone of them, it should not be older than three months).
  • LPG Gas Connection Card
  • Bank Account Statement
  • Credit Card Statement
  • Depository Account Statement (not more than three years old)
  • Certificate of Address proof duly signed either by Member of Parliament or Member of Legislative Assembly or a Gazetted Officer or Municipal Councilor
  • Address proof Certificate provided by your Employer
  • Property Registration Document
  1. A photocopy of your date of birth proof:
  • Passport
  • Voter ID Card
  • Aadhaar Card
  • Driving License
  • Health Card issued by central Government
  • Marriage Certificate
  • Birth Certificate
  • Pension Payment order
  • Matriculation Certificate (Mark sheet of 10th Class)
  • Domicile Certificate
  • If type of Card Holder is ‘Other’:
  • A photocopy of Registration Certificate, it must be issued in India, or you can provide a Copy of approval that is granted by Indian authorities.
  • A photocopy of Registration Certificate that is issued in the country where applicant is located.

Above documents must be attested by anyone of the following officials:

  • Indian Embassy
  • Apostille
  • High Commission of the country wherever applicant is located.
  • Authorized officials of overseas branches of Indian Scheduled Banks.

Which documents one should provide to apply for any changes or correction in PAN details or to reprint the PAN Card?

In case someone already has Pan Card but wants to make any correction or changes in PAN details you need to provide following necessary documents:

  • Passport Photograph
  • Proof of identity
  • Address proof
  • Proof of your Date of Birth

For these documents you can use anyone of the above mentioned type of proof.

  • Copy of already issued PAN Card, and
  • Additional documents with reference to the changes you want to make in your PAN details.
  • If you want to make any changes in your name, you can provide following anyone of the following documents:
  • In case of Married Women:

Marriage Certificate, Marriage Invitation Card and Publication of Name Passport mentioned the husband’s name and a Certificate issued by Gazetted Officer are required.

  • In case of Individual:

Copy of Publication of Changed Name, Certificate issued by Gazetted Officer.

  • When type of holder is Company:

Copy of Certificate with the changed name approved by Registrar of Companies.

  • If type of holder is a Partnership Firm:

Copy of Certificate containing New Name of the Firm or Copy of Revised Partnership deed.

  • If the holder type is a Limited Liability Partnership:

Copy of revised Partnership deed or certificate of new name from Registrar of LLP.
